Students Earn Tommy Awards For Spring Musical

The Beloit Memorial High School Spring Musical, "Hairspray," was not only a success in Beloit, but it has been recognized with several Tommy Awards, which is a state-level competition for high school musicals. 

Five judges were sent to the school to assess the musical production, with the result of BMHS earning several awards which will be recognized at the 2011 Tommy Awards ceremony, June 5, 7 p.m., at the Overture Center in Madison. 

In addition to receiving the awards, the musical’s two outstanding leads will perform solos at the recognition ceremony.

The awards received included:

  • Outstanding Ensemble: Hairspray  (only 4 out of 30 schools got this)
  • Outstanding Lead: Cole McMillan (character: Link Larkin)
  • Outstanding Lead: Jackie Thompson (Tracy Turnblad)
  • Outstanding Supporting: Alex Vance (Seaweed J. Stubbs)
  • Outstanding Stage Management: Stephanie Gunning (only 2 out of 30 schools got this)
  • Community Engagement: Hairspray (the only school out of 30 to get this award)

The following students will also be recognized at the awards ceremony for their work:

  • Honorable Mention Supporting: Rachel Lisensky (Velma Von Tussle)
  • Honorable Mention Supporting: Jake Ward (Corny Collins)
