'Fit Families Rock' program planned to fight fat | Business
A new health program in Rock County is aimed at combating area childhood obesity.
An 11-week program called Fit Families Rock will utilize weight loss research to help participants establish healthy behaviors and prevent health problems linked to obesity.
To be eligible, families must have at least one child between the ages of 8 to 12 who is at or above the 85th percentile of their age-appropriate body mass index, or BMI. In addition, the family must commit to having at least one parent attend all sessions although the entire family is welcome to participate.
The group meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:35-5:30 p.m. at the Downtown Janesville Family YMCA from Sept. 16 to Nov. 25.
The cost to families is $25, which includes individualized follow-up and a three-month family membership to the Janesville Family YMCA. Experts on behavioral change, stress management, nutrition and exercise from St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital, Dean Clinic-Janesville East, Janesville Family YMCA, UW Extension-Family Living and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater will help throughout the program.
Fit Families Rock is a component of St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital’s focus on promoting healthy lifestyles in the community. Additional components include St. Mary’s Janesville’s annual Produce Power and Janesville in Motion events as well as its sponsorship of the Janesville Farmer’s Market.
